FAQ – Berlin travel

On this page you can find details on how to travel to Berlin – when to go, what are the prices, etc. Technical details, but super important when you travel around!

When to go and for how long?

Any time of the year will be completely fine for visiting, but I think winter may make it hard to enjoy walking as it can get quite cold in this part of Europe. And every city looks better in sun. So try to choose some moment between April and September.

We spent 3 days in Berlin, but we did real sightseeing only during 1 day. First day we have arrived very late, so there was no much time for visiting the city and on 3rd day we started journey back early in the morning. I think you can do most important things in 1 day, but 3 days would be more optimal. To be honest you can spend even much longer in Berlin and there will be always something to do there.

How to travel?

Getting to Berlin highly depends where do you live, but options are almost limitless – plane, train, car, bus, etc. Once in Berlin, public transport is really the best option. Metro is fast with many stations and if you want to travel between areas which are far away from each other then you can use S-banh, which is a local train that runs also between stations in the city. All the metro carriages are in yellow and that is kind of “cute”, almost like New York yellow cabs.

Ticket system is quite easy – tickets you buy at metro stations are valid to use also in other means of transport. Tickets are quite expensive, but if you buy daily ticket than the price becomes much more reasonable. Just be careful – daily ticket is valid on the day it was validated, not 24 hours since validation. And one last thing – always remember to validate the ticket. Lack of gates does not mean that ticket is valid from the moment of buying it.

What to take for photography?

During trip I was testing my new lens Fuji 14mm f/2.8 which was suitable for 95% of cases. Very rarely I tried 35mm f/2.0, but it was too narrow for the city needs. I’m happy with pictures 14mm produced, so I managed my first ultra-light trip with just two small prime lenses and one mirrorless camera! If I would stay longer maybe I would take tripod with me, but I didn’t have enough space in my backpack this time.

Where to sleep?

We slept in Aldea Novum hotel and it was kind of ok. We paid 75 EUR per night per 3 people, so it wasn’t very cheap, but still for Berlin conditions – not so expensive. Room was clean, quite spacious, but it was rather moderate standard. Big plus of the place was location – not in the city centre, but with very good connection by metro so in 15 minutes we could get to the most places we needed.

What are the prices?

Visiting Berlin is rather cheap. Hotel can be quite costly, but food is very okey if you decide to eat Kebab or something similar. Most of the places to visit are for free with exception of Reichstag and Pergamonmuseum. This city is really made for people who want to travel cheap.
